The Somatic Causes of Chronic Fatigue No One Talks About
When you are suffering from chronic fatigue, the standard medical assumption usually aligns with the same assumptions; perhaps it's a virus, perhaps it's depression. You are taken through blood tests, thyroid checks, iron panels, and sleep studies, and when everything comes back 'normal,' (I rode that shaky coaster a long time ago), you are left with a label, no cure, and total overwhelm.
How are you supposed to live like this!?
If you are a woman who feels exhausted down to her bones - yet can’t find a physiological smoking gun - you aren't crazy, and you are not broken. But you may be looking in the wrong place.
As a health and fitness professional with a somatic and whole-person lens, I see a massive blind spot in how we treat exhaustion: we treat chronic fatigue as if it is a mechanical failure, when it is often a protective state of the nervous system.
This is the part I learned the hard and slow way.
Let's look past the surface symptoms and explore the hidden, somatic causes of chronic fatigue that no one is talking about.
1. Chronic Functional Freeze (The Nervous System’s Exhaustion Brake)
Most people understand 'fight or flight' - that adrenaline-fueled rush to handle immediate danger. But when danger is chronic, emotional, or psychological, and you cannot fight or flee, your nervous system resorts to its most primitive survival mechanism: dorsal vagal shutdown, or the freeze response.
In a somatic context, freeze isn't just collapsing on the couch; it is often a functional freeze. You wake up, go to work, take care of your family, and function - all while your nervous system is fighting to pull you back with all it's might.
-
The Somatic Reality: Your body is burning massive amounts of hidden energy simply keeping unexpressed survival responses locked inside your musculature and fascia.
-
The Fix: Recovery doesn't come from pushing harder or drinking more caffeine (if thats even working for you now); it requires signalling deep, internal safety so the nervous system feels secure enough to disengage the brake.
2. Emotional Labor and Micro-Stresses
Women are conditioned to carry invisible cognitive and emotional loads. You hold the calendar, track the moods of everyone around you, and manage a constant stream of micro-stressors without ever pausing to complete the stress cycle.
Whilst your husband is focussed on the hear and now, you're thinking about the past, and all the things that may go wrong in the future. Maybe you're completely hung up on a conversation with a friend last week thinking, does she even like me? I mention this because perceived stress is a stressor, of the emotional category.
When emotions like anger, grief, boundary-setting frustration, or hyper-vigilance are repeatedly suppressed, they don't just disappear. They get trapped in the somatic architecture of the body.
-
The Somatic Reality: Muscular bracing - tight shoulders and hips, a clenched jaw, shallow chest breathing - requires continuous energy. You are exhausting your physical body by holding up invisible emotional walls through your fascia.
-
The Fix: Somatic release work, intentional breath regulation, and strength training with a focus on internal awareness help discharge these trapped stress residues (getting strong is a true regulator!), this frees up vital energy.

3. The Exhaustion of Identity Mismatch
Sometimes, chronic fatigue is an intelligent, somatic protest against the life you are currently forcing yourself to live.
If your daily existence requires you to suppress your authentic needs, play small, or function in an environment that constantly pushes up against your internal values, your biology pays the price. Living out of alignment with your true identity creates a chronic internal friction that drains your energy.
-
The Somatic Reality: The body often uses exhaustion as a circuit breaker. When you refuse to slow down or pivot voluntarily, your nervous system forces a hard shutdown to protect you from burning out entirely.
-
The Fix: Realising that health isn't just about food and workouts - it’s about identity integration, recognising nervous system patterns, and building a life that doesn't require a biological emergency to get your attention.
Moving From Management to Rebuilding
Perhaps this has been an overwhelming (albeit likely accurate read) of what's been going on for you? I wish I had a quick fix for mine which started in 2014, but there was much to be done in order to overcome it - nutrition, repairing the involuntary nervous system responses and learning how to set boundaries around yourself and the life you dream of, is key to recovering from Chronic Fatigue.
Chronic fatigue is not a life sentence. Often, it is an invitation to stop fighting your body, listen to the language of your nervous system, and begin the deep work of rebuilding from the inside out.
Not to make it sound easy, because of course, its not. More to give you hope!
